Create texture with water in watercolor with this easy-to-follow tutorial.
As with all silhouettes, it’s the outside edge that matters. That, however, doesn’t mean that the interior of the shape should be lifeless.
One way to enliven shapes is with texture. In watercolor, the most natural way to create texture is with water. By applying water into still wet or damp area an uneven wetness of the surface occurs and creates so-called backruns that are characteristic effects of watercolor. Once dry, they contrast nicely with the soft wet-into-wet passages.
You may also experiment with adding salt crystals to the damp wash to get stronger, more pronounced effects.
